Description: Join Terry and Kara for an all-levels Salsa-style dance lifts workshop! Whether you’re brand new to lifts or looking to refine your technique, this workshop is designed to build strength, trust, and creativity between partners. We’ll focus on salsa-style lifts, with most of the material pulled directly from the instructor’s own performance routines — but don’t worry, easier variations will be offered to suit all experience levels. No prior experience or partner is required.
Prerequisites: This workshop is for all levels. No experience or partner required.
Instructor Bios:
Terry is a dancer and acrobat with a passion for creative expression. He’s been performing Salsa for four years and earned second place in the Advanced Amateur Teams division at the World Salsa Summit. In addition, Terry has experience in multiple disciplines as a performer and choreographer. He’s taught with Viva Dance Studio, Crooked River Circus, Sky Circus, and Tabitha in Motion. Whether he's on stage or in the studio, he loves sharing his “vision” with anyone he can.
Kara has been dancing for over 30 years, nearly since I could walk. My training started with ballet, jazz, and gymnastics. In middle school, I focused on gymnastics and cheer, competing and winning multiple national championships with Impact Athletics in Apex, NC. I competed on the elite company team at the Academy for the Performing Arts in Apex, NC through high school. We earned multiple titles throughout the US, including at the Showstopper competitions. Through high school, one quarter of my classes were dedicated to Honors Dance Ensemble, where I choreographed and performed in multiple dance styles and began teaching dance to my fellow students. After high school, I performed on the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Seahawk Dance Team, where I choreographed sideline and halftime/timeout performances. I also competed across the country with the hip hop crew “Physical Grafeeti”, and was trained in group exercise instruction. After college, I traveled to LA, DC, and NYC on my weekends off to take hip hop classes and workshops. In 2016, I earned my 200-hour yoga teacher certification and began teaching yoga, both vinyasa and yin classes. Since 2020, I have primarily focused on Latin social dancing as a member of Viva Dance Studio’s company teams, Azucar ladies team 2020-2023, Saoco de Mambo partner team 2023-present, and Malevo bachata shines team since 2024. My salsa partner and I compete and perform a couple’s cabaret routine as well. We compete across the US, Canada, and Mexico. We have earned second place in the advanced amateur teams division at the World Salsa Summit, third place in Las Vegas, and made finals in Mexico.
